Countering disinformation, protecting science and scientists

Countering disinformation

The work of Nature.Health.Global. is based on scientific research that demonstrates how human activities on a global scale have altered the balance on our planet, and driven damaging consequences for our landscapes, atmospheres and oceans, and for our own health and welfare.

We believe it is possible to build a more sustainable future without undermining our economic security, but this will require shifts in consumption choices, from food, through travel and work life, to a more preventive approach to global health. These changes are seen by some as threatening to entrenched industries, and there have been substantial efforts in the past few decades to undermine the science behind conservation and public health, and to attack scientists who work on these issues.

Nature.Health.Global: Countering Disinformation

Nature.Health.Global. is committed to supporting science and scientists working to build a more sustainable and healthy relationship between people and our planet. We are forming partnerships with journalists, documentarians, lawyers, science organizations, educators, writers, and the general public to promote transparency in reporting, efforts to identify politically-motivated disinformation, and to raise awareness of, and support scientists under attack.

This rise in ‘anti-science’ has become a focus of disinformation strategies often funded by political groups to push an agenda. COVID-19 has seen a sharp rise in attacks against scientists who work in virology, epidemiology and global health.

NHG is working to counter disinformation of this kind.

Disinformation programs, funded by dark money and in some cases foreign governments followed similar strategies to those used to attempt to undermine scientists focused on health impacts of smoking, climate change science, vaccine science and the potential benefits of GMOs like golden rice.
